Active Pursuits: Dogsledding
Just imagine taking a traditional dogsled out into the Arctic ice floes and snowy tundra. Outfitters in the North run several-day trips to see the aurora borealis in early spring, and in late spring they offer trips to the floe edge, where wildlife viewing is great (this is your best chance to see a polar bear). You'll get a turn at driving the dog team and will sleep in comfort in special room-size tents heated with small stoves (no igloos!). Outfitters will usually provide all the gear necessary for the weather, though you should be prepared to get a little cold. Outfitters on Baffin Island provide dogsled trips ranging from part-day to a week out on the tundra amid dramatic mountain and fjord scenery; February to May is the best time.
